I find the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain a fascinating basilica. While the light from the stunning stained glass windows in the this Antoni Gaudí-designed church is warm and enveloping, I find the church itself cold because the stone is all machine cut. It doesn't have that hand-hewn draw of the old cathedrals of Europe. Still, it's impressive and it was worth paying for a top-notch tour. September 2024.

What's particularly amazing about the Carthage ruins in Tunisia is that there was almost nobody there when we visited. And that's normal. If you want time to yourself to explore Roman ruins, forget Italy. Go to north Africa! September 2024.

These are two priests (though presumably of a higher rank) in a relatively private hallway of The Vatican. My husband participated in a scientific meeting hosted by the Vatican Observatory and as a result, his group (including me!) were invited for a private audience with Pope Francis. While we waited for him, we got to see parts of the Vatican most people aren't allowed to enter. It was incredibly cool. June 2024.
